With Paradise Killer, the player has complete control over how the mystery of whodunit unfolds. You’ll be thrust into a fantastical island setting where you’ll have to solve a mass murder, but you’ll bear the brunt of the blame. Aside from talking to the colourful suspects, there isn’t much guidance in this open-world game.

It can be overwhelming at first. For those who have never played a video game before, the first hour or so can be overwhelming. There are a few things you’ll learn about the island and your situation as you go about your business. Initially perplexing, the setting eventually becomes fascinating and provides the opportunity for some truly bizarre plot twists and turns.

It takes a lot of walking and talking to gather your own evidence, and while the excitement of finding the answers on your own is thrilling, the actual act of getting around can be exhausting. The island is quite large, and it is littered with people, items, and important clues that are all too easy to miss. If you want to get the most out of the storey, you should look everywhere, but getting from point A to point B is tedious and expensive in-game currency.

In the end, though, Paradise Killer will have you hooked. Its clever design allows you to begin the endgame trial whenever you want, giving you complete control over the outcome. Procedural proceedings can begin as soon as you’re confident that you understand what happened. There is no single correct answer. This is a game that manages to be both visually appealing and musically engaging, thanks to the combination of the former and the latter.

Score – 8/10
