King’s Bounty II (Preview) – Spotlight
We recently got our hands on an early build of King’s Bounty II for preview and have been playing the game for a while now. For the uninitiated, the King’s Bounty series of games have traditionally been turn based RPGs, with the first game, King’s Bounty: The Legend, putting you in the shoes of King Maximus. There have been other games in the series, however, King’s Bounty II is a direct sequel to the first game.
In King’s Bounty II, you get to pick from one of 3 hero characters, build your own team of warriors, and lead then into a fight against the enemies of Nostria. Firstly, the visual upgrade is noticeable, and while not a tech showcase, it does look great, especially with the simplistic yet appealing art direction. And while still turn based when it comes to combat, the exploration and interactions are all done via a third person camera perspective. This makes the exploration more fun, though the world is not as open to it as you would want. Note that this is still an early preview version and not the final release.
You’ll go about exploring, talking to people, recruiting members to your team, and fighting enemies. The combat is well presented and really fun. Upon starting an encounter the game changes perspectives and presents a grid like vide of the combat arena. You then issue commands and engage the enemy. A fair amount of options are presented to you in terms of team composition, enemy variety, and abilities.
Overall, we enjoyed our time with it, and do look forward to the final release.
